the fairy playland that used to be my backyard…

i hope you all enjoyed friday’s post and all the fruits and veggies that are growing!  now, on to the beauty of the backyard.

as you saw last week, my mom leaves beauty.  she can’t help it.  and, that is exactly what happened when she came to visit me.  she took my vision for my backyard and made it more beautiful than i ever could have imagined.

see for yourself…

what the backyard used to look like…

from the other direction...

between the back of the house and the garden was dirt.  however, i wanted that area to be a patio/fire pit/sitting area.  so, i didn’t add grass seed to that area.  i did add it to the hill area, and just and FYI…that landscaper’s blend GROWS!!! throw it down, throw hay on top of it, water it and watch it grow!!!!!

i had a couple of things i told mom….

  1. i wanted to make the patio area large and since i can’t afford stone, i thought i could use mulch.
  2. i wanted a green backdrop behind the house with some color in front of it, and i thought drift roses might be good.

that was it.  well, she took that and transformed it!!!!  she had bought an iron gate at an estate sale and brought it up with her…

sitting on top of the weed cloth...trying to make sure i don't get any grass under the patio...

well, now, you have seen what it looked like before and the gate she brought with her.  all of that became this…

the steps from the back door up to the backyard...they are old concrete pieces we found...

the herb garden is right next to them...rosemary, mint, thyme, basil, two types of parsley...and lavender should grow up on the other side of the steps...

that's right! it's a wine bottle border. i had been saving them and wanted to use them as a border and mom surprised me with putting them in on an angle! BEAUTIFUL!!!

the side one with the blackberry bush in the back...

knockout roses, inkberry bushes, iris, and seedum...

burford holly around the window, iris in front of them, and more seedum...

drift roses in front, with the inkberry behind and a japanese maple...

my sweet man made me the adirondack chairs....they are SO comfortable!!!

what mom created with that iron gate...she had a little help from the hippie to build it...

and, now, the BIG PICTURE!!!

view one...and, yes, bella is sunning herself...

view two...my personal favorite!!!

i now walk out my back door and am shocked that i live here.  it is such a beautiful haven for me.  i love getting up early or coming home from work and watering all of my plants.  i love growing life.  it is an amazing thing.  i feel blessed to have this space.  and, i am overwhelmed by my mom’s gifts.

in my next post i will reveal the beauty that she left in the front of the house….yes, i am milking this for all that i can!!!
