preparing for the east nashville tomato festival…

the tomato art fest is in 2 weeks and my garden is preparing.  i am going to take my tomatoes and try to talk my lovely and talented friend into making some more bloody mary mix, like she did last year.  she says she can’t recreate it, but i am betting she can come up with something pretty darn good.

if some of you are wondering what the tomato art festival is….let me enlighten you…

it is EAST NASHVILLE's time to shine....

there is a whole website that tells you about our beloved tomato festival.   click here to check it out.  from that website, here is an explanation of the history…
The Tomato Art Fest was founded by Meg and Bret MacFadyen, owners of East Nashville’s Art and Invention Gallery. In 2004, the gallery hosted an art show celebrating the tomato in late summer, and planned a few neighborhood events to promote the show. The Tomato Art Fest proved so popular that it immediately turned into an annual, signature event for the hip, urban neighborhood of East Nashville.

we are truly blessed to have meg and bret macfadyen building our community and bringing us together.  i have only met them a couple of times, but i can’t help but sing their praises.  there are a LOT of activities at the tomato fest this year.  there is a lot of tomato art (yes, that is a category), some great pre-fest meals, loads of live music, community gazpacho, a 5k, and a bunch of other lovely things to delve into.  the list of those activities is here.

if you are an east nashvillian, you are probably already working on your tomato recicpes for your porch party.  if you are NOT one of us…then, i highly suggest you PLAN your day to include this amazing festival.  if you live out of town, come anyway!  it would be a great road trip weekend.  🙂

here is how my garden is preparing for the tomato fest….i am planning on some bloody mary mix and a bunch of fried green tomatoes.  🙂

the little yellow ones are yellow pear tomatoes and are so sweet and tangy for salads...the larger ones are black krim tomatoes and they are amazing all by themselves...

due to the birds pecking ONE HOLE in ALL my tomatoes, i have to pick them a little green and let them ripen in my windows...

i strung pie tins by pink string over the garden to keep them out...so far it is working. we shall see...i will beat the BIRDS!!!!

i’ll keeep y’all updated on how it goes….
